The story behind the photo from Vincent's words:
Find Your Trance
Traveling alone and working as a freelancer never really make you open or talk about what’s behind the images.
Here in Haïti when I shot these images some years ago, I wasn’t yet a photographer. I knew photojournalism was a passion, photography an inevitable attraction, but never really knew how to make it my profession. Few weeks before my trip to Haiti as a humanitarian worker, I bought myself a beautiful burden : my first professional camera. A second hand Canon 5D, to put myself pressure to do something for it. If I spend all my savings in a camera, I have to use it.
I heard about the Souvenance pilgrimage and decided then I would give a try to play the documentary photographer. I would see how I’d feel.
I got to Souvenance with my camera, one extra shirt and underwear. That’s it.
I started hearing the beats of the drums approaching.
Soon thousands of people, mostly very drunk, were walking around me, drinking, dancing. Non stop. The drums were loud, but on this first minute I think my heartbeat was even louder. Confused between fear and excitement.
Someone saw me with a camera and started getting angry at me. I felt like an, intruder, paralyzed, scared.
When you are thrown into sea, the only way to survive is to start swimming, without thinking.
I got offered rum, and I accepted it. And the man cheered me and asked me to take photos of him with his friends. I understood the only way to be accepted was to drink, dance, and find your state of trance, just like everyone.
